Cockfighting
Chatsworth, CA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 1, 2008
County: Los Angeles

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Leopoldo Barron

A 35-year-old man was in custody today after the Los Angeles Animal Cruelty Task Force found numerous fighting roosters, equipment related to cockfighting, and large quantities of cash at a property in Chatsworth, authorities said.

Leopoldo Barron, 35, was arrested Tuesday in the 10400 block of Variel Avenue near Devonshire Street after Task force members received a tip that cockfighting was taking place at the residence, an ACTF statement said.

While searching the property, task force members discovered numerous fighting roosters, cockfighting paraphernalia, and a large quantity of U.S. currency, the statement said.

Also found at the residence was a large quantity of methamphetamine, more than a pound of marijuana, and several loaded firearms, according to the ACTF.

Barron, whose immigration status is also in question, could face up to five years in state prison, fines and deportation, the statement said.

The day after Barron was arrested, one of his neighbors contacted the ACTF and thanked the agency for its efforts.

"Last night was the first night I could open my windows and enjoy my home undisturbed by the roosters," the resident said, according to the ACTF statement.
