more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Defendant/Suspect: Brandon Matthew Nagy

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

After someone reported a man abusing his pit bull, officers arrested the owner Monday night after finding the dog injured and blood smeared on the man's hands and shoes, Hillsboro police said.

It all started when police responded to the man's home at 860 N.E. Sunrise Lane in Hillsboro about 9:20 p.m. to investigate the abuse report, police said.

The resident, 22-year-old Brandon Matthew Nagy of Hillsboro, initially told officers he did not own a dog, police said. Later, he admitted he had a dog, and it was found in the garage with injuries to its head and tail area, police said. Officers also noticed blood on Nagy.

Police believe the man kicked the dog and threw it up against a shed in his backyard.

While checking his home, officers found an AK-47 rifle under his bed, police said. Because Nagy has a conviction for a prior felony drug charge, he was lodged in the Washington County jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm - in addition to second-degree animal abuse.

The dog, named Kaluah, was taken to DoveLewis pet hospital, where it was treated for its injuries and placed in the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Washington County.

Case Updates

A Hillsboro man accused of kicking and throwing his pit bull will spend a year in jail, concluding a case that garnered worldwide attention.

"You are going to have a significant jail term for what you've done, and you deserve it," Judge Steven L. Price told 22-year-old Brandon Matthew Nagy at his sentencing Monday.

Nagy's dog, Kaluah, was found with injuries to its head and tail area in April after someone reported that the man was abusing the dog at his home on Northeast Sunrise Lane.

When officers arrived, Nagy initially told them he did not own a dog before eventually admitting he did. Officers found it injured in the garage and noted that Nagy had blood on his hands.

Police also found an AK-47 rifle under his bed, and, due to a prior conviction for a felony drug charge, Nagy was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in addition to animal abuse charges.

The dog was treated for its injuries and placed in the Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Washington County.

Nagy pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated animal abuse, first-degree animal neglect and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During Nagy's sentencing on Monday, his attorney, Michael Sahagian, said people need to know that Nagy does care about his dog and that most of the injuries Kaluah suffered were from a car accident.

"He simply made some bad choices, and, quite frankly, the publicity of this case from really all over the world has, in my opinion, forced this situation to get to where it is today," Sahagian said.

In addition to the jail time, Nagy was ordered to pay more than $4,000 in restitution and to undergo anger counseling.

The judge said for 15 years Nagy shouldn't even pet the neighbor's dog.

The case attracted attention from a number of animal rights groups, including the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the United States Humane Society and the Best Friends Animal Society.

The pit bull, meanwhile, was expected to get placed in a special home by a pit bull rescue group.
