Cockfighting
Spartanburg, SC (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 27, 2008
County: Spartanburg

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Spartanburg County officials discovered a cockfighting operation Thursday morning during the first day of a three-day environmental enforcement sweep of the county. Environmental enforcement officers stumbled upon a cockfighting ring, tools and syringes next to buildings housing chickens in the Camp Croft community.

Sgt. Jamie Nelson said no action could be taken regarding the illegal activity, under state law, because the participants weren't caught in the act. But the property owner and a man living on the property received citations for littering and erecting a building without applying for a permit.

"We told him he's out of the chicken-fighting business for now, and the sheriff's office, as well as us, is going to keep an eye on the property," Nelson said.

Seng Chanh, who owns the land at 370 Fox Drive, said he only raises chickens and does not fight them. One rooster with an eye injury was taken by officers.

The environmental enforcement sweep runs through Saturday and includes litter pick-up and code enforcement.
