Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Two men charged with severely burning a small dog on July Fourth are scheduled for trial next month.

Michael Adam Young, 33, and Danny Ray Edwards, 21, both face animal cruelty charges for injuries to "Indi," a 9- pound terrier mix. Investigators believe the dog was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire.

During an administrative hearing Monday, attorneys for Young and Edwards waived arraignment. A superior court judge placed the case on the Dec. 2 trial docket. The maximum punishment is 15 months, according to Lora Peterson with the Yancey County District Attorney's office.

The case has generated enormous attention, becoming a symbol for animal activists and helping raise awareness of animal cruelty, according to Marion Norris, president of the Yancey County Humane Society.

Humane Society members and others filled several benches in a Yancey County courtroom Monday.

"It's very important to stop that kind of behavior," said Yvonne Towery, one of those following the case. "I think it (the case) has really made people aware of what is going on."

Named "Indi" for Independence Day, the dog suffered severe burns on his underside and around his mouth and eyes, but he survived and is doing much better, according to Norris.
Norris said she and others will continue to monitor the case, showing up in court whenever the case is on the docket. "We want the law to be enforced," she said.

Case Updates

Danny Ray Edwards, 21, will spend 8-10 months in prison on a felony cruelty to animals conviction and another 26 months in prison because the conviction violates his parole on a felony child abduction. Michael Adam Young, 33, will spend 30 days in the country jail for his part in the crime. Young testified against Edwards in exchange for a misdemeanor conviction in the case.
