Dog dies of strychnine poisoning
Grand Junction, CO (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Mar 22, 2008
County: Mesa

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A Grand Junction man lost his dog to strychnine poisoning Saturday. Authorities believe that incident may be related to coyote baiting.

Colorado Department of Agriculture officials are investigating, department spokeswoman Christie Lightcap said Tuesday.

Hazardous materials investigators with the Grand Junction Fire Department still are trying to determine if the meat that dog ate was contaminated with strychnine, Lower Valley Fire District Chief Frank Cavaliere said.

The dog apparently brought back a package of meat from the property at M and 17 roads that had been part of the 30 pounds of old meat discovered in a freezer thrown over a hillside on the property, Cavaliere said. Lower Valley still is trying to find out if the freezer full of meat belonged to the landowner, he said.

The owners out of town due to a death in the family is what I was told, Cavaliere said. Were trying to contact him and see if he knows anything about it.
