Two emaciated dogs locked in car
Derby, CT (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Mar 18, 2008
County: New Haven

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Joseph Disessa

Police resorted to breaking windows in a van parked outside Griffin Hospital Tuesday afternoon to rescue two emaciated dogs inside.

The dogs were taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment while their owner was charged with animal cruelty.

Joseph Disessa, 20, who according to police has no permanent address, was also charged with possession of narcotics and possession of a stolen motor vehicle marker plate, police said. Disessa was visiting someone in the hospital and left the dogs in the van, police said, but it appeared that they had gone without food at least three days.

Disessa was held in lieu of $1,500 bond for arraignment today [March 19, 2008] in Derby Superior Court.

The two dogs, a pit bull mix and a boxer mix, were taken for treatment to Dr. Tara Nanavati's clinic on South Main Street in Seymour. "They are very skinny like they were not fed properly," Nanavati said. "You can see their ribs and how thin they are."

The dogs will stay at the veterinarian facility for the foreseeable future, Nanavati said.
