Pulaski County's Humane Society Director Kay Simpson and her team rescued 54 adult dogs, several of them pregnant, and nearly a dozen just born.
Wednesday night, volunteers traveled through flooded roads to rescue the dogs from a puppy mill in Searcy County.
"The urine and the feces smell were over powering. There was quite a bit of urine and feces on the floor," says Simpson. "As you can see their nails had not been cut in a long time. They were hooked around the wire."
A few dogs were dead, and left on the ground, others lethargic and visibly sick.
"One pug in particular needs eye surgery another pug has glaucoma and will probably have to have the eye removed," says Simpson.
The team veterinarian Teresa Medlock is checking all the dogs for other possible side affects of being kept in a cold, wet, cramped environment.
"Any time you have a lot of dogs in a small environment if one dog breaks with a virus there's a better chance of it spreading throughout the room," explains Medlock.
The dogs are kept in a completely separate wing at the Humane Society, with its own ventilation system to help prevent the spread of possible airborne viruses.
They'll stay there for up to two weeks, until the vaccinations kick-in. In the meantime, the dogs are being photographed pending a possible legal case, and nursed back to health.
The Humane Society says what it needs more than anything right now is small to medium dog collars and stainless steel feeding bowls.
