Alleged: Richard Lee Butler

Richard Lee Butler, 36, of 231 New York Ave., in Alexandria, was arrested Tuesday and charged with 12 counts of dog fighting and 19 counts of cruelty to animals, according to Trooper Scott Moreau, Louisiana State Police public information officer.

This is what happened according to a release from State Police:

Investigators received information that Butler was involved in drug trafficking and dog fighting and began an investigation. When they went to his home they saw a number of pit bull dogs living in poor conditions.

Alexandria Animal Control was called in and saw the dogs living in puddles of water with poor shelter. The dogs were malnourished and had scarring consistent with dog fighting.

After seeing these conditions, Animal Control removed these animals, confiscating 12 adult pit bulls and seven pit bull puppies.

During the investigation State Police saw a dog-fighting pit bordered by a utility shed with dried blood splattered on it.

In the center of the pit was a piece of pipe hammered into the ground with a chain attached to with dried blood on it.

Butler was booked into the Rapides Parish Jail and is being held in lieu of $79,000 bond.
