Authorities rushed to rescue nearly a dozen animals they claim were abused and neglected in Brazoria county. The animals were all taken from an enclosure at Highway 225 and County Road 61. Allegedly the animals lacked food and water, and one animal in particular seems to have suffered a terrible injury.

Eleven animals were rescued in all, including a horse with a very bizarre wound. It is difficult to believe your own eyes when you see it a horse with a see-through hole in its neck.

"At this point I have no idea what caused that," said Jim Boller of the SPCA. "The horse is extremely lucky. Basically the hole is between the ligament in the back of the neck and the back bone It's cut through. It could have been an old abscess that had ruptured and had gone through. It could have been from a gunshot. It may have run a stake through its neck."

Remarkably, the incredible neck wound doesn't seem to bother the horse at all at this time, although it was certainly a painful wound before it healed over.

Besides the horse, there was a calf with a possibly broken shoulder, and nine other neglected animals. They all came from a rundown enclosure in Brazoria county. This property is fairly remote and extremely difficult to find.

Authorities say these animals had been left largely to fend for themselves.

Boller told Eyewitness News, "We found all these animals in deplorable housing and sanitation conditions. There was no food or water on the property."

A woman who lived nearby didn't realize the owner wasn't caring for the animals.  "I thought he was back there feeding them and taking care of them," said Doris Jones. "I didn't know."

All of the animals are now being examined by a veterinarian to see if any will have to be destroyed.  According to the Brazoria County District Attorney, Paul James is the owner of the property. A criminal investigation is under way. Charges may be filed.
