Dog-fighting - 13 dogs seized
Shelby, NC (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jan 14, 2008
County: Cleveland

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Roger Levon McClain
» Justin Wade Willis

The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office has completed its investigation into a dog fighting incident on Jan. 14.

Investigators recently presented the case to the District Attorney's office and arrest warrants were obtained for Roger Levon McClain, 29, of 411-6 Lemmons Road, and Justin Wade Willis, 23, of 907 Oakvale Drive. The two were arrested and charged with dog fighting and cruelty to animals.

The case will be taken to Grand Jury Monday.

Originally an anonymous caller told police that two men in the trailer park had been fighting their dogs. The caller stated it was "terrible to listen to when the dogs fight."

According to the paperwork and witness statements, Willis wanted to test his pit bull's fighting abilities against one of McClain's dogs.

Search warrants were issued Jan. 15 for homes at 407-5, 411-4, and 411-6 Lemmons Road, Mooresboro. Officers confiscated 13 pit bulls, nylon and fiberglass whips, syringes and Lidocaine after searching the homes, according to search warrant records.

According to Marguerite Mebane of the Cleveland County Humane Society, the arrests have highlighted a larger issue in the county.

"The Michael Vick case has certainly cast a light on the plight of fighting dogs," Mebane said. "And there is an awful lot of evidence of dogfighting in our community."
