A pet dog cheated death after swallowing poison while walking with her owner in woodland near Fochabers.
The dog – a two-and-a-half-year-old Pointer-Labrador cross – has made a full recovery, but was seriously ill.
She was taken to the vet when she began salivating and shaking after walking at Orbliston on March 2. Her eyes were darting around and her stance was stiff.
It is thought she may have eaten a bait possibly containing the poison alphachloralose, which affects the nervous system.
Wildlife crime officer Constable David MacKinnon said: "It is not uncommon for pets, particularly dogs and cats, to be harmed or even killed by ingesting poison, either when it has been deliberately placed in the open, or as a result of picking up poison which has been placed for the control of rats or mice.
"We are keeping an open mind with this inquiry, but have not ruled out that the dog was targeted."
