Galveston police are looking into another report of a brutal cat killing. Police on Friday provided few details of the cat's death except to say the juvenile division is investigating it as an animal cruelty case.

A police report says officers were dispatched to an alley in the 1300 block of 55th Street. On Friday Mijong Dewitt, who had been feeding a gray mother cat, showed where the cat was found dead.

Twine, she said, was wrapped around the cat's neck and legs and then the twine was tied to fences on each side of the alley. The cat was then stretched over the alley and between the fences. Twine was still tied to the fences on Friday.

Dewitt, who held back tears while explaining the scene, said she and her husband first dialed 911 on Sunday after finding the cat in the alley. She said the cat's head was about to fall off.

A police officer came to the scene, Dewitt said, and took down some information. Before the officer departed, Dewitt said the officer told her that he "had lost his appetite because of what he saw." Dewitt added the officer left the area and didn't return. The officer also left the cat behind, she said. So she later buried it in her back yard.

Dewitt called police again on Thursday because she hadn't heard from the officer who first responded. A police report provided to the media shows that the cat's death was reported on Thursday. "It doesn't matter if it was an alley cat," said Dewitt. "It's cruel."

Dewitt, 47, said she has been so upset because of the incident that she had to take antidepressants. She said the dead cat had six kittens just before her death. The mother cat had put the kittens under Dewitt's house. The kittens have since been taken to a shelter.

Dewitt added the dead cat's mother was found dead in the same alley about a year ago. She said it appeared the mother cat had been poisoned.

An 11-year-old boy who lives nearby said he saw two boys stringing up the cat across the alley. Asked about the death, the boy said: "It's bad, because you don't kill God's animals."

Dewitt said at least one of the boys seen stringing up the cat has denied any wrongdoing. Another adult woman in the area, Jennifer Jones, 45, said the same 11-year-old boy told her what he saw.

"He said he (one of the boys) put a lot of string on the cat's neck and stretched the cat, to where the cat was wide open, from one end to the other end, hanging from the fence," Jones said.

Last year, several juvenile boys were charged with felony cruelty to animals after they were accused of stoning a cat in an alley near 38th Street and Avenue M.

However, authorities were unable to confirm that the boys actually killed the cat and the case was to be dismissed in an agreement. The boys had to meet several conditions through the agreement, which included writing a 20-page report about the benefits of animals and pets to people.
