Cattle neglect, several dead

One calf was found dead and several cattle died during an investigation into animal cruelty at a farm near Ferndale, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office.

Owner Allyn Deets has been arrested and charged with first-degree animal cruelty after allegedly failing to feed and properly care for the 70 cows at 3068 Lampman Road, according to sheriff's Detective Sgt. Kevin McFadden. A trial is set for May 5.

The remaining cows are being fed and doing well, said Laura Clark, director of community outreach for the Whatcom Humane Society.
