Two men are suspected of driving two dogs to an area in Pocono Farms and abandoning them there, where police later found them with signs of abuse and neglect.
Shawn Corcas and Curtis Hailey, ages not listed, both of Stoney Hollow Circle in the Dresser Hill area, may or may not be charged with animal cruelty based on the outcome of an ongoing investigation, Pocono Mountain Regional Police said.
A Pocono Farms resident called police at 4:41 p.m. Monday and reported seeing a rental box truck stop on Seneca Way. The resident saw two men get out, take two dogs from the back of the truck, leave the dogs in the street and drive away.
Police later stopped a box truck matching the description of the one seen and found bloody mattresses, dog leashes and bags of garbage in the back. The dogs have been taken to the Monroe County SPCA.
No further details have been released.
Case UpdatesA Monday tip about two men being seen abandoning two dogs has led to one man facing animal cruelty and drug and gun possession charges and the other facing animal cruelty citations.
As of noon today, police were awaiting Shawn Corcas' return to his Tobyhanna home to arrest him. Corcas works in New York.
Police executed a search warrant at his home this morning and found 13 dogs in a kennel, seven handguns, one shotgun and between a quarter-pound and half-pound of marijuana.
Corcas, who pleaded guilty to rape and burglary in New York in the 1990s, is not allowed to own guns as a convicted felon, police said. The Monroe County Treasurer's Office has no evidence of him having a license to own a kennel, police said.
Police found some of the dogs in cages, the rest out of cages and feces and urine in the cages and throughout the house. But, the county SPCA said there is nothing to warrant removing the dogs because they appear to be well cared for and have food and water, even though they haven't had their rabies shots.
Police said the dogs likely will stay with Corcas' wife once he is arrested. But, if the house isn't cleaned of feces and urine and made sanitary, the dogs will be removed.
Police found Curtis Hailey at Corcas' home during the search. Hailey told reporters he lives with Corcas and his wife, fixes things around the house and helps care for the dogs. Claiming he knew nothing about the marijuana and guns, Hailey said Corcas raises dogs to sell and give to area pet stores.
This morning's search stemmed from a Monday tip police got from a Pocono Farms resident who reported seeing two men in a rental box truck abandoning two dogs in that development. Police responded to that scene and found the dogs with signs of abuse and neglect.
Police later stopped a truck matching the description of the one seen and found bloody mattresses, dog leashes and bags of garbage in the back.
The driver and passenger were identified as Corcas and Hailey. Police said Corcas told them he wanted to get rid of the dogs.
The investigation later led to Corcas' home. He faces additional animal cruelty charges for the two dogs abandoned Monday in Pocono Farms while Hailey faces animal cruelty citations for his role in that incident.
Police added that Hailey was charged Feb. 29 with presenting a false driver's license when his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation on Route 196 in Tobyhanna.
If Corcas does not return home or come to police Heaquarters today, police will issue a warrant for his arrest. | Source: Pocono Record - March 15, 2008 Update posted on Mar 15, 2008 - 1:02PM |
