A puppy is recovering after someone tied rubber bands around the base of her ears. The 10-week-old Labrador was found on North Perry Street in Pontiac on Wednesday with her ears severely infected.

She was taken to the Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills for surgery to remove its ears.

Kara Beyerlein of the adoption center said someone had attempted to remove the dog's ears through home cropping.

Home cropping is often done on pit bulls to make them look meaner.

"We're thinking someone must have mistaken her for a pit bull mix," Beyerlein said.

On the way into surgery, one of the puppy's ears fell off. The other was removed during surgery.

The puppy is taking antibiotics and is expected to make a full recovery.

She is a good dog and is very affectionate and has been placed with a foster family in Lake Orion on Friday to continue her recovery.

It may be weeks before she can be adopted. For more information on pet adoptions at the Oakland County Adoption Center.

Case Updates

Officials with Oakland County Animal Control are offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest -- and another $500 if there's a conviction -- of whoever was responsible for disfiguring the ears of a Labrador puppy found wandering in Pontiac.

The badly infected ears were surgically removed last week at the county animal shelter in Auburn Hills, said Larry Obrecht, manager of the Oakland Pet Adoption Center. The ears had been bound with rubber bands.

The reward is offered by the Oakland Pet Fund, the private nonprofit partner of the county center.

"This act was appalling," said Deborah Schutt of Bloomfield Township, chairwoman of the nonprofit group. A suspect could be charged with animal cruelty and face up to 4 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, Schutt said Wednesday.

Metro Detroiters have made three dozen offers to adopt the dog, which will be placed after it recovers from surgery, Schutt said.

Anyone with information should call 248-858-1074 from 8 to 5 weekdays and ask for Mike Zehnder. To donate to the pet fund's reward money for other cruelty cases, visit www.oaklandpetfund.org.
