A gunshot from an unknown suspect Wednesday caused a dog to lose its leg. A report released Thursday by the Lenawee County Sheriff's Department said the dog's owner, a 24-year-old woman who lives on the 8500 block of Seneca Highway, returned home about 1:35 p.m. Wednesday and found one of her three dogs missing.
She observed her other two dogs pacing back and forth along the gate of her fenced-in backyard. She then went around to the front of the gate and found her third dog, Fudge, a male chocolate Labrador retriever about 6 years old, had been shot.
She scooped Fudge up and took him to a Morenci veterinarian where he underwent surgery.
The dog owner said it appeared as if all three dogs had gotten out from the fenced area and had been running around.
The report continued by saying the dog owner said her dogs often get out, but she was usually available to retrieve them. She wasn't able to Wednesday because she'd been at work.
A 40-year-old neighbor listed in the report, who was questioned about the incident, said he was out in his garage about 10:30 a.m. when he heard three gunshots. He initially didn't think much about it, as people often shoot guns off in the area. He peered out from his garage and witnessed a green truck stopped in the road that took off quickly. He also noticed his neighbor's two dogs running free.
He saw his neighbor's third dog lying next to her house, and it didn't move.
The neighbor assumed the truck must have hit the dog. He didn't go over to check its status.
Fudge was shot in his left shoulder where the bullet, described as a "shot slug with noticeable deformities," was lodged. His entire shoulder and leg were shattered.
The owner was given the option to have the veterinarian euthanize Fudge or have his leg amputated. She chose amputation.
The report stated the owner said the veterinarian expected the dog to be released after this coming week.
Fudge's recovery has come sooner than expected.
"He's doing a lot better today than he was," a receptionist at the Morenci Veterinary Clinic said Friday about Fudge's current condition. "His owner is going to pick him up today."
