The Humane Society of the U.S. is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to the owner of a pit bull, abandoned in a Renton parking garage. A security guard at Valley Medical Center spotted six month-old Milo on Feb. 9, starving and dehydrated.

"He just looked horrible," said Mary Tahlequah who has since adopted Milo. "He was scared, skinny, he just didn't look good."

Tahlequah's friend Stefanie Trumbla was called to a Renton veterinarian after her mother offered to take care of the dog. She said Milo was so weak, he used his elbows to walk. His paws were wounded, his elbows scraped so badly his bone was sticking out.

The vet told Trumbla Milo suffered from a birth defect described as a "flexor contractor." The dog's muscles were shortened and that prevented him from using his wrists normally.

Home video shot six days after Trumbla rescued Milo shows the dog limping with his paws facing inward. He is unable to put weight on his hind legs. Tahlequah said Milo's condition was so bad because his previous owner did not take proper care of him.

"He was left in a cage or crate a lot. Wounds on his elbow were from trying to get around," she said.

Vets suggested euthanizing Milo but Tahlequah refused to accept that as an option. She pitched in some money for Milo's medical costs and treated his wounds from her Kent home.

A few weeks after he was rescued, Milo can slowly walk down the stairs with his heavily bandaged legs but he still needs a metal plate placed in his wrist. Tahlequah said that surgery would cost $5,000 more and she does not have the money for that.

She has set up a fund at Wells Fargo Bank and created the website http://pleasesavemilo.tripod.com documenting Milo's recovery in hopes of raising the funds needed for the puppy's medical costs.

"He's got a really great soul in there and a willing spirit to live," she said.
