Cat killed in washing machine
Muskoka, ON (CA)

Incident Date: Saturday, Feb 23, 2008

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

Police are investigating an Algonquin student's claims that friends of her roommates killed her cat by running it through the washing machine.

Sylvia Gough called police late Saturday night after she came home and found the lifeless body of her three-month-old cat, Thor, in the machine.

"It had gone through a full cycle," said Ms. Gough, a first-year paramedics student from the Muskoka area.

Sylvia Gough called police late Saturday night after she came home and found the lifeless body of her three-month-old cat, Thor.

Ms. Gough had left her Bowhill Avenue townhouse briefly that night while one of her five roommates hosted a small group of friends.

An hour and a half later, Ms. Gough got a phone call that her cat was dead and in the washer.

"It crippled me," said Ms. Gough. "I fell down crying."

Tuesday, Ms. Gough fondly remembered the orange tabby with a white tummy she picked up in November after answering an online ad.

"I was completely smitten, he was the most adorable little thing," she said of the then six-week-old kitten. "He was the size of my hand."

She named him Thor because he was so tiny and she figured he needed a big name.

Meghan Dubeau, another housemate, said Thor was one of the best cats.

"I felt angry as well as upset," said Ms. Dubeau about the cruel death.

The Ottawa Humane Society noted that, while most people in the city are responsible pet owners, incidents of animal cruelty have been on the rise in Ottawa.

"Unfortunately, animals are all too often the victims of people," said Sharon Miko, director of operations for the humane society.

As for Ms. Gough, she wants the perpetrators, whose names she says have been turned over to police, to be caught and punished.

"I want people to know this does happen and it's not right."
