Dog beaten, kicked and hanged
Amityville, NY (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Feb 2, 2008
County: Suffolk

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Marquis Roker

An Amityville man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after a witness reported seeing him beat, kick and hang his pit bull by its collar from a backyard fence because the dog was barking, Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

Marquis Roker, 22, of 485 Broadway, Amityville, was also charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration after SPCA officers and Amityville police department officers responded to the witness's complaint, the SPCA said.

The arrest, which took place Feb. 2, was disclosed in a Sunday news release from the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The witness saw two beating episodes on the same day, the SPCA said.

All the while, the dog was yelping and crying, Gross said.

In the first beating, Roker punched and kicked the dog and threw it to the ground before going into his house, the witness told the SPCA and police.

Ten minutes later the dog was still barking and Roker came out again, beat the dog and slammed it to the ground, then grabbed it by its collar and hung it on a fence, the witness said. The dog was squirming to get down and the witness's intervention saved the dog from further abuse and possibly saved its life, Gross said.

Roker was taken to Amityville Village police headquarters for processing and charging.

The Suffolk SPCA, based in Smithtown, is an independent nonprofit humane agency that enforces animal cruelty laws in the county.
