Animal Service investigators looking for the person who killed and skinned a raccoon, then left the animal's mutilated carcass near a bike path last week teamed up with PETA to offer a reward for information about the killing.
A bike path user discovered the raccoon's body on the side of the levee bike path near East Cliff Drive and Pearl Street around 9 a.m. on Jan. 2, according to county Animal Services Authority Field Supervisor Todd Stosuy. The animal had been beaten with a pipe or baseball bat and skinned elsewhere, then left on the levee. It was also missing its feet, ears and part of its tail, Stosuy said.
Stosuy and Santa Cruz police worked on the animal cruelty case together. When the investigation came to a standstill earlier this week, Stosuy said he felt moved by the "heinous nature of what happened to the animal" and contacted the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The group agreed to offer a $2,500 reward will be awarded to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the raccoon killer. That person faces animal cruelty charges, as well as possible violations of the state Fish and Game code, according to Stosuy.
