A Minneapolis woman is awaiting trial, accused of severely injuring a 5-week-old puppy. Court papers say she threw it at the wall outside the house. The pup, now named Parker, broke his leg in two places and suffered a severe brain injury. Minnesota's stiffer laws for deliberately hurting animals are now holding abusers accountable. "I did not think he was going to make it. He was almost comatose, he was so injured," said Underdog Rescue Group founder Shannon McKenzie.
McKenzie was among the first to see the 5-week-old puppy after he was allegedly beaten in the head with a metal spoon, and then thrown against a wall. "She was yelling at her son, 'I'm going to do you like I'm doing this dog'. It was definitely to torture the animal to intimidate someone," said Minneapolis Animal Control Officer Tom Doty. "Just that someone would do this and have no regard that this is a living, feeling creature. Instead it was used as a tool of abuse. It was disgusting," said McKenzie.
Glory Curry, who lives in North Minneapolis, is accused of abusing the puppy in April 2005.
"He's never going to be the dog he could have been," said McKenzie. The puppy was first treated at an animal hospital, then taken to Minneapolis Animal Control and soon adopted by Underdog Rescue Group. "We didn't know what kind of issues might come up down the line, both with his leg and with his brain injury," said McKenzie. So she adopted him. "He was so special," she said. "I just felt in his case my home was the best."
Curry would not comment about the abuse allegations.
McKenzie hopes the charges send a strong message, "to say we won't tolerate that behavior."
Curry is charged with a gross misdemeanor and if convicted she faces a penalty of a maximum one year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine. References « More cases in Hennepin County, MN
