9 horses, neglected - seized from farm
Olalla, WA (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 23, 2008
County: Kitsap

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Timothy C Sternling

An Olalla man has been charged by county prosecutors with animal cruelty, stemming from an animal control raid on his property late last month in which 9 horses were seized.

Timothy C. Sternling, 55, was charged with one count of second-degree animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, Friday morning in Kitsap County District Court, said senior deputy prosecutor Claire Bradley.

Kitsap County Animal Control Chief Rance McEntyre said officers had been working with Sternling for about a year before Jan. 23, when they served a search warrant on his 160th Street property in Olalla.

The horses were found to be neglected, malnourished, and living in a pasture with a poor shelter and pieces of debris that could cause injury, he said. Eight of the horses remain at the Kitsap Humane Society, McEntyre said, while the ninth, which had the most serious health risks, is staying at a private home. All are expected to make a full recovery, he said.

Bradley said McEntyre has already appealed the seizure of the horses twice. Sternling was not held on the charges and will return to court at a later date for a possible trial.
