An elderly woman in South Natomas who has been targeted before by arsonists was hit again Wednesday night. This time arsonists slashed her small dog after starting a fire in her garage, fire officials said.
The dog was found behind the woman's Pony Express Drive home shaking and barely breathing, said fire Capt. Jim Doucette. Animal Control took the dog to their facility, but it had to be euthanized, Doucette said.
The woman was in the hospital Wednesday when someone kicked in a door to her garage and set the fire just after 7 p.m., fire officials said. The blaze was set in a pile of rags and did only minor smoke damage, Doucette said.
Neighbors told firefighters that trees and bushes outside the woman's home were set on fire last summer. No arrests have been made in connection with Wednesday's blaze.
