Farmed animal neglect
Bend, OR (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 30, 2008
County: Deschutes

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Donna O'Kula

Three-dozen animals, including 22 chickens, have been seized in a raid on a home east of Bend and a woman cited on 19 misdemeanor counts of first- and second-degree animal neglect, Deschutes County sheriff's deputies said Thursday.

Ten goats, two horses, 22 chickens and two peacocks were seized when a search warrant was served Wednesday at the home of Donna O'Kula, 58, at 62540 Dodds Road, said sheriff's Lt. Gary Decker.

An investigation had begun last Friday with a report to the sheriff's office of possible animal neglect, Decker said.

The animals were recovered from the property and taken to the Humane Society of Redmond with the help of the Redmond shelter, the state animal welfare officer and Blissful Acres Rescue Reserve, Decker said.

O'Kula was issued a citation to appear in court on seven counts of first-degree animal neglect and a dozen counts of second-degree animal neglect, the lieutenant said.

Second-degree animal neglect, a Class B misdemeanor, alleges that someone "intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence fails to provide minimum care for an animal" in their custody or control, Decker noted. The first-degree charge, a Class A misdemeanor, goes on to alleges that the failure to provide such care "results in serious physical injury or death to the animal."
