Police dog stabbed San Diego, CA (US)Incident Date: Tuesday, Jan 22, 2008 County: San Diego
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Patrick Gautier
A police dog stabbed as San Diego officers subdued a man with a knife at a Talmadge motel was released Wednesday from an animal hospital, police said.
Jake, a 2-year-old German shepherd, was stabbed several times during a confrontation with Patrick Gautier, 43, who was waving a knife and threatening patrons Tuesday night at the Travelodge motel on El Cajon Boulevard near 50th Street, according to police.
Gautier is expected to be released from Scripps Mercy Hospital Wednesday night and booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and assault on a police service dog, Lt. Kevin Rooney said.
Police arrived at the motel around 8:40 p.m., tried to talk Gautier into surrendering, and then shot him twice with a bean-bag shotgun, Rooney said.
Officer Larry Adair, a 17-year veteran, then confronted Gautier on the motel's third floor, and Gautier moved toward the officer with the knife in his hand, Rooney said.
The officer ordered Gautier to stop, and when he refused, he sent Jake after the armed man, who then stabbed the dog, Rooney said. Adair fired one round from his gun. The shot missed, but it was enough of a distraction for officers to arrest Gautier, Rooney said.
Adair grabbed Jake in his arms and rushed him in his patrol car to VCA Emergency Animal Hospital in Mission Valley. Jake is expected to return to duty once he recovers from his injuries.
Gautier was treated at the hospital for dog bites and for injuries from the bean-bag shots.
Adair was not placed on administrative leave, which is a routine move when an officer fires a weapon, because no one was killed or seriously injured, Rooney said. Adair and his supervisor will determine when he returns on patrol. References« CA State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in San Diego County, CA
