Loudoun County Animal Control Officers have seized 48 horses, many suffering from malnutrition and neglect, from a property in Middleburg. The horses are currently being housed at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter.
Animal Control Officers have been monitoring the horses' condition since November. During a routine follow up inspection on Tuesday, Animal Control Officers became concerned about the decline in the horses' condition.
They enlisted the assistance of Dr. Karen Iovino of Blue Ridge Veterinary Associates, who examined the horses and determined that their condition had deteriorated to a level that warranted their removal from the property.
With assistance from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department and volunteers, the horses were transported to the Loudoun County Animal Shelter Tuesday night. The horses range in age from under one year to senior, and are in varying states of health and temperament.
Shelter staff members are diligently working to provide them with proper housing, food, water, and medical care. Some of the horses have special needs due to their poor condition and staff will take all necessary steps to ensure the care and welfare of these animals.
Animal Control is currently working with the Commonwealth's Attorney to determine the nature of charges to be filed against the owner of the horses. A hearing is set for Jan. 30 to determine if the horses will remain in the custody of Animal Control.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
