Three dogs starved, dehydrated - one dies
Easton, CT (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jan 5, 2008
County: Fairfield

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Wendy Friedman

A woman is charged with cruelty to animals after police said she was not properly feeding or caring for her three dachshunds, one of them a puppy.

Wendy Friedman, 48, of Judd Road, was arrested Monday on a warrant.

She was also charged with possession of a wild mammal, because police said she had kept a chipmunk as a pet. She told police that she had found the chipmunk injured six years ago and had cared for it since then.

The investigation began after officers responded Jan. 5 to a dispute between roommates at the Judd Road home over care of the dogs.

Police said Friedman had entrusted care of the dachshunds to her roommate while she was away on a trip. The roommate claimed to have fed the dogs in her absence. But while Friedman was later taking them to a veterinarian for care, one of the dogs died, police said.

A veterinarian reported the dog that lived was malnourished and dehydrated, according to police, and a necropsy was ordered for the one that died.

Meanwhile, police said the puppy, also malnourished and suffering from parasites, was placed under a veterinarian's care.

Friedman, who could not be reached for comment, was released on a promise to appear Feb. 1 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
