Cockfighting - over 70 birds seized
Tyrone, MI (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jan 26, 2002
County: Kent

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Narcizo Gutierrez

At 1324 17 Mile Road, authorities discovered a rooster fighting arena inside a barn, and over 70 fighting roosters and hens. Police also say they found records of gambling and rooster fighting operations.

Four adults and one child were identified on the scene. Charges will most likely include animal cruelty and operating an illegal animal fighting operation.  Officers seized all the animals. They are being held at the Kent County Animal Shelter.

Gutierrez admitted to fighting the birds but said there was no gambling going on.  Gutierez raises fighting roosters and sells them to Mexico and South America.

50 people had allegedly gathered for the fight.
