The owner of a Mt. Pleasant Township animal rescue shelter was charged with six dog law violations stemming from a surprise inspection.
Susan Johnson, operator of Animal Angels Inc., 419 Three-Mile Hill, failed the inspection Nov. 8 by officers of the state Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Humane Police officer Gary Moore, the violations were graded as third-degree misdemeanors because Johnson was convicted of similar violations before District Judge Mark Mansour of Hempfield within the past year.
"We viewed numerous piles of feces in all of the outside runs, as well as in the fenced-in yard area," Moore reported. "There were three areas of standing water in the outside runs, which indicated lack of adequate drainage."
Seven staffers with the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement conducted the inspection. They found fencing with broken and rusted wire that could injure the dogs, bedding that was covered in feces, floor boards inside the facilities saturated with urine, an adult rat and two dead baby rats.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Feb. 14 before District Judge Ronald J. Haggerty Sr. in Connellsville.
