Kitten's ears cut off

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A stray kitten whose ears were cut off is being treated at the Humane Society of Kent County for that injury and others after the 3-month-old animal recently was found near M-37 and Peach Ridge Avenue.

The kitten is the victim of "shocking" animal cruelty, humane society officials said today.

In addition to the severed ears, the kitten -- nicknamed "Eeyore" by Humane Society workers -- suffered a hernia from being hit or kicked and a nose injury, said Dr. Wendy Swift, the facility's medical veterinary director.

"We could tell by the injury that this was done intentionally with some kind of sharp blade," Swift said.

Karen Terpstra, the society's director, said authorities are hoping to identify a suspect in the cruelty case.

The kitten was found Dec. 19 and brought to the animal welfare group for treatment that has included surgery and medication.
