Dog severely beaten
New York, NY (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Dec 9, 2007
County: New York

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Douglas Bolton

An upper East Side dog was beaten by its owner's boyfriend - just days after a Siamese cat died after being attacked by his owner's girlfriend in the same tony neighborhood, authorities said.

"Because pets are precious, very often people will lash out at someone by hurting their pet," said ASPCA spokesman Joseph Pentangelo. "It crosses all economic zones and zip codes."

The dog, a 7-pound miniature pinscher named Franklin, spent nearly a week in the hospital.

"It was horrific. His eye was protruding," said Franklin's owner, May Amko.

The dog, which suffered brain damage and remains blind in his left eye, was beaten Dec. 9 after Amko's then-boyfriend, Douglas Bolton, 24, arrived at her E. 91st St. doorman building, court papers say.

Bolton, who was angry he had been unable to contact Amko, reached one of her two roommates by phone, authorities said.

"All hell is going to break loose if she doesn't come home," he yelled, according to court papers.

Soon after that, Amko and her roommates returned home to find Franklin bleeding from the head.

Bolton was charged with felony animal cruelty. He was released on $2,500 bail Monday, officials said.

Franklin is "a lot better now," Amko said. "He's walking and he's eating."
