The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal protection organization, is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the torture of a dog found stabbed multiple times in Omaha, Nebraska.
On Saturday, March 1, an animal control officer from the Nebraska Humane Society was dispatched to a home on Ohio Street in northeast Omaha where he found a young adult female pit bull bleeding and cowering in the backyard, according to investigators in the case. Jay Wilson, lead investigator with the Nebraska Humane Society, described the dog's injuries in the World-Herald ("Information sought on injured dog" March 2).
Descriptions of her injuries include slicing wounds that exposed her spine and a deep cut from her eyes to her nose. Investigators believe that a large knife or machete was likely the weapon, and that it was also used to inflict deep wounds into the top of her skull. Other scars on the dog's body and worn-down toenails indicate that she was likely used in dogfights, according to Wilson. Due to the extent of her injuries, the dog was humanely euthanized.
"The sheer brutality used in attacking this dog is chilling," said Diane Webber, director of The HSUS Midwest Regional Office in Des Moines. "Anyone capable of unleashing such violence on an animal is likely a threat to people as well. The connection between animal abuse and violence against humans is well documented. I hope this reward will bring those responsible for this crime to justice before another animal or possibly a person gets hurt."
Other groups that have contributed to the reward fund are: Capital Humane Society of Lincoln; Animal Crackers; Bellevue Dog Obedience Club; Friends Forever Guild, all of Omaha; and Northern Crystal Kennel of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Volunteers at the Nebraska Humane Society have also donated their own money toward the fund bringing the combined total to $8,639.00.
