A calico kitten stuffed inside a plastic bag and buried beneath refuse in a trash barrel was rescued from a West Side street Tuesday.
The Manchester Police Department is seeking information regarding the incident as part of an animal cruelty investigation.
A man in the area of Blaine Street, near Second Street, found the cat after hearing some scuffling noise coming from the barrel. The man rescued the kitten and brought it home for the night before calling police the next day.
Police are seeking infomation on this kitten, which was found stuffed in a plastic bag buried under debris in Manchester.
Manchester Animal Control Officer Dennis Walsh, who retrieved the cat, said the female kitten was very friendly, indicating it was a pet rather than a feral or wild cat.
The kitten, which is about four weeks old, is black, white and brown in color. It appears healthy and is resting at the Manchester Animal Shelter, according to Walsh.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 668-8711 or the Manchester Crimeline, which provides cash awards for anonymous tips, at 624-4040.
The Manchester Animal Shelter, at 490 Dunbarton Road, provides animal sheltering services for the city. The non-profit shelter takes in stray and homeless animals, providing them with medical treatment, food and shelter before making them available for adoption.
Animal shelters and humane agencies say they see a number cases of animal neglect and cruelty at this time of year, even with winter approaching.
"It's just out straight with different rescue calls," said Maureen Prendergast, an animal cruelty investigator and community outreach coordinator for the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire. "When temperatures drop this drastically, it becomes even more critical."
Prendergast said the stress of the holidays, combined with financial distress for some people, exacerbates the problem of neglected pets. She said that, in many cases, people are unaware of available resources at local shelters, such as the Animal Rescue League, the Manchester Animal Shelter or New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
