A man from Jeffersonville faces an animal cruelty charge for allegedly shooting a dog, said Vermont State Police.

Scott Peterson, 49, was issued a citation to appear at Vermont District Court in Hyde Park on Jan. 7.

Police said Dennis Shanley, of Jeffersonville, reported that his dog returned home last Wednesday with a bullet hole in its body. The dog underwent surgery and is recovering.

Peterson later told troopers that he had been hunting when he saw a doe being chased by a group of dogs. Peterson said he shot one of the dogs.
