Ryan Wesley Mahan, 22, aka Ryan Sorenson, was received a two-year suspended prison sentence.  Mahan was ordered by District Judge David Cole to complete two years of intensive supervised probation, 200 hours of community service and undergo a psychological evaluation.

Mahan pleaded guilty in January to a felony charge of cruelty to animals in connection with injuries sustained by Patches, his mother's pet cat.

On Nov. 9, Mahan's mother found the cat bound with a belt and severly burned on the porch of her residence.

A veterinarian who examined Patches found fur burned off all over the cat's body. Its back paws were blistered, and part of the pad of its paws was coming off, according to report by Pueblo Animal Services Field Operations Manager Julie Justman.

Previous to the incident, Mahan had told his mother that he hated her cat.

The act of cruelty was not Mahan's first crime. He pleaded to a misdemeanor charge of motor vehicle theft and was sentenced in February 2002 to serve 150 days in jail, according to court records.

If Mahan fails to live up to the terms of his probation, he will have to serve the prison term.
