Four dogs neglected, fighting suspected
Robbins, IL (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Nov 20, 2007
County: Cook

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Nathan Knazze

A Robbins man was arrested Tuesday in a case involving 5 dogs that had injuries consistent with dogfighting after police got a tip about unlicensed dogs living in filthy conditions, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said.

Nathan Knazze, 33, of the 13700 block of South Albany Avenue, was charged with three counts of illegal possession of certain dogs by a felon and one count of failing animal ownership duties, all misdemeanors, authorities said.

Authorities began investigating the man a week ago after hearing that he was keeping unlicensed dogs, Dart said in a statement. He is being charged under a new Illinois law that prohibits convicted felons from possessing vicious dogs.

Knazze has served time for possession of cocaine.

At Knazze's house, detectives found four pit bulls in back-yard cages and a Rottweiler chained to a fence, authorities said. One of the pit bulls was severely injured, with one eye missing, scars on its face and feet, and a bleeding nose, Dart said.

The animals didn't have food or water, authorities said. Detectives also found $610 under a bedroom mattress, authorities said.

Animal control employees placed all the dogs in a local shelter, Dart said. A veterinarian will determine whether the dogs were injured in dogfights, Mateck said.

Knazze's bail was $100, Mateck said.
