A 1-year-old Jack Russell terrier was dropped off at a North Valley animal hospital on Monday with injuries consisent with sexual assault.

According to detectivies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's office, the male dog had injuries normally associated with rape.

Deputies have arranged for a rape kit to be administered on the animal. Results are currently being tested at a local laboratory.

Veterinarians say the dog has injuries including the tearing of his rectum.

Sheriff's deputies say the dog also suffered what are thought to be chemical burns to the insides of both ears.

Minutes before the dog was dropped off at the hospital, neighbors say they saw a man in the area described as 5 foot 8 inches tall, with tan skin and dark hair. He was driving a late 60s or early 70s red or brown pickup truck with a dual exhaust system.

That man was apparently acting suspiciously, lingering nearby and carrying a small red animal carrier before he sped away.

Ten minutes later, the injured terrier was found on the street.

"We'd like to find the driver of this truck," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "We're fairly certain he knows what happened to this dog and who may be responsible for it."
