A 62-year-old Santa Clara woman barred from keeping pets has been charged with violating probation after authorities seized 22 neglected cats from her Eugene home on Nov 7, 2007.
Jo Ann Zeh was arraigned Thursday in Lane County Circuit Court. She was prohibited from owning animals as a condition of probation for an earlier animal neglect conviction after authorities seized more than 50 cats from her property on Admiral Street in September 2006.
Since her conviction in June, Lane County Animal Services employees had visited her house several times to investigate complaints of animal neglect, animal services manager Mike Wellington said. The cats should be available for adoption next week.
Case UpdatesLane County Animal Services and Greenhill Humane Society volunteers rescued 22 cats from a local residence this past week after responding to a reported probation violation. LCAS staff hope the community will support efforts to place them in caring homes.
"Responding to animal welfare cases is a difficult part of the work we do but it's rewarding to help these animals find the nurturing homes they need," said Mike Wellington, LCAS manager.
LCAS anticipates the possible release of these cats for adoption on Tuesday, Nov. 13 or Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Wellington said once the cats have been medically evaluated and cleared for adoption, he hopes the community will step forward and provide permanent homes.
Community members who are unable to adopt but want to help may provide monetary donations that will go toward the medial care of these cats.
LCAS employees have been to the residence several times for animal welfare checks. The owner of the Santa Clara home was on probation for animal neglect and not permitted to care for animals.
Last fall LCAS (formerly Lane County Animal Regulation Authority), with the assistance of Lane County Sheriff's Office, executed a search warrant on the home after receiving information regarding animal neglect at the residence. More than 50 cats were removed from the property in September 2006, and the owner of the residence was charged with two counts of Animal Neglect 1.
