Dog-fighting - a dozen dogs seized Warren, MS (US)Incident Date: Saturday, Nov 10, 2007 County: Warren
Charges: Felony CTA Disposition: Alleged
Abuser names unreleased
Authorities found a dozen pit bulls chained to trees in the woods of Warren County, near the Hinds County line, late Saturday night. Nearby, investigators uncovered what appeared to be a dog-fighting arena. They are now looking for the person or people responsible.
"This was clearly an operation set up to fight the dogs for whatever sick entertainment people get from that," Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
The Warren County Sheriff tells News Channel 12 that deputies have been watching the area closely. Game Wardens found the 16 by 16 foot arena in the woods and called deputies. The sheriff tells local media they have a strong case, but at this point they have not made any arrests. He also says multiple people could be arrested, because in Mississippi it is a felony to watch dogfighting.
Investigators took photos of the dogs tied to trees and metal stakes. Most had gashes and scars.
"They were really thin, and they didn't have any shelter," Christy Lamb, Vice President of the Vicksburg-Warren County Humane Society said.
"There was no food or water," Lamb said.
Lamb is one of the animal rescue workers who picked up the pups early Sunday morning. Of the 12 pit bulls, she says only the two youngest have a chance of being rehabilitated.
"If they show aggression we can't adopt them out, because we can't take that chance that they would kill another animal or even get a child," Lamb said. References « More cases in Warren County, MS
