more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Nine dogs, one donkey found starving
Ashkum, IL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Aug 1, 2007
County: Iroquois

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Elizabeth Brown

Iroquois County officials have charged Elizabeth Brown with cruelty to animals after rescuing a number of allegedly starving and neglected animals from her home in rural Ashkum.

Iroquois County State's Attorney Jim Devine said the seizure of the nine dogs and one donkey occurred in August, but Brown was charged on November 8. Devine disclosed the charges at a Nov 13 County Board meeting.

"The allegation is she basically abandoned several dogs without appropriate food, water or shelter on her property in rural Ashkum," Devine said.

Devine said the donkey was "arguably OK" as it had access to rainwater and grass, although the hooves were overgrown.

The animals that were seized are now in the custody of Iroquois County Animal Control, Devine said.

In addition to the new charges against her, Brown was convicted about three years ago of breaking the county's kennel law. She had about 30 dogs on her property, and county regulations restrict people without a kennel license to five animals.
