Dog fatally shot, police officer charged
Fayetteville, NC (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Oct 28, 2007
County: Cumberland

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Patrick Edsel Cashwell

A Dunn police officer who allegedly shot and killed a stray dog has been charged with animal cruelty.

Patrick Edsel Cashwell, 46, of the 3200 block of Florida Street in Fayetteville, was cited on a misdemeanor offense in the Oct. 28 incident, according to court records.

Cashwell is accused of shooting the dog although he was standing in his fenced yard and the dog was on the other side, records say.

Cashwell is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County District Court on Dec. 10.

He remains on his job as a patrol sergeant, said B.P. Jones, the Dunn police chief.

Cashwell told Jones that his children were in the yard and the fence gate was open when the dog became aggressive.

Jones said he will wait until the case is heard before taking any disciplinary action.
