31 dogs found emaciated - living in feces
Wittman, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Nov 7, 2007
County: Maricopa

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Lonnie Sherwood Brown

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies found 31 emaciated Dalmatian mixes on November 7, 2007, in a home in Wittman. The six puppies and 25 adult dogs were found with no water and were believed to have gone without food for several days, according to a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office press release. The dogs were taken to the First Avenue Jail and were being fed, cleaned and cared for by county jail inmates Thursday. The Dalmatian mixes will remain there until a court decision is made.

The dogs were found after a tip from a caller indicated possible animal abuse at the home in the 24000 block of West Peakview Road in Wittman, a city about 45 miles northwest of Phoenix.

The owner, Lonnie Sherwood Brown, 53, was arrested on suspicion of 57 counts of animal cruelty and neglect. Deputies who conducted a search of the home found some of the dogs tied to metal poles outside the house. Other dogs were in metal crates inside the home. Deputies said the residence was filled with feces and that there was almost no dog food in the home.
