A Nova Scotia man facing a charge of cruelty to animals has pleaded not guilty and will go to trial Feb. 15.

Russell Frank Hirtle, 62, of Chester also pleaded not guilty to assaulting Shelly Lynn Arenburg on Sept. 6 and breaching his probation that same day.

The animal cruelty charge alleges that Hirtle caused unnecessary pain and death to chickens by strangling them and throwing them on the ground.

Hirtle is bound by a recognizance until his trial including he have no contact with Arenburg.
