Harvey police arrested a 36-year-old woman Wednesday after they said she tried to chop off her Rottweiler's tail with a meat cleaver, Chicago Ridge Animal Welfare League spokesman Terry Sparks said.
Felony animal cruelty charges are pending against the woman, who was taken into custody after witnesses told police they saw her and two males in the driveway of a house near 158th Street and Ashland Avenue, holding the dog down while she cut its tail with the cleaver, Sparks said.
When a Harvey police officer and animal control Officer Terry Brown arrived at the house, "We asked to take a look inside the garage and the dog appeared to be gone," Brown said. "The offender stated that someone must have taken the dog."
The two officers searched until they found the dog cowering under a car parked inside the garage, authorities said.

A Harvey woman accused of nearly severing her Rottweiler's tail with a meat cleaver was charged with aggravated animal cruelty Thursday, Harvey police spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado said.
Sonja Jackson, 36, of the 15800 block of South Ashland Avenue, is scheduled for a bond hearing at the Markham Courthouse Friday on the charge, a class 4 felony, authorities said. If convicted, she faces one to three years in prison.

The dog's tail was amputated at the Chicago Ridge Animal Welfare League, league spokeswoman Terri Sparks said. Once the dog, named Nuggi, has recuperated from surgery and has been relinquished to the league, it will be put up for adoption, she said.
"We want to commend those witnesses who called this horrific situation in to the police," Alvarado said. | Source: Chicago Tribune - Nov 9, 2007 Update posted on Nov 9, 2007 - 12:51PM |
