Two dogs trapped in duffel bag, thrown in river
Cardiff, WA (UK)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Oct 31, 2007

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Two puppies were left to drown after they were trapped inside a sports bag and hurled into a river.

Animal welfare officers are hunting the culprits who dropped the tan and white cross-breed pups – who were no more than six weeks old – into the River Ely, near Ely Bridge, Cardiff, on Wednesday lunchtime.

One of the pups has since died.

The RSPCA is trying to trace a woman and boy who were seen in the area at the time.

A witness saw the blonde-haired woman and boy, thought to be around 10 years of age, in a silver BMW 320 series saloon car with silver tinted windows in Wroughton Place at about midday on Wednesday.

The car registration number began with KS 51.

The witness saw the boy get out of the car holding a black sports bag, branded with the word Admiral.

He crossed a metal stile, heading towards the river and later returned to the car without the bag.

The witness saw a similar-looking bag floating down the river and waded in to retrieve it.

It was filled with water and contained two young puppies, aged between four and eight weeks old.

RSPCA inspector Christine McNeil said: "It's vital we trace the driver of this silver BMW as quickly as possible.

"These poor creatures endured the most appalling cruelty.

"One of them has died and the other is in a very fragile condition.

"This sickening act can't be allowed to go unnoticed and unpunished and we would urge anyone with any information on the car or persons to contact us."

Anyone who has any information should call the RSPCA, in confidence, on 0300 1234 999.

The incident comes just a day after we reported how a court convicted 21-year-old Michael Vallejo, from Caerau Lane, Ely, Cardiff, of strangling a puppy to death.

He was warned that he could face jail.
