Neglect - 12 dogs and 3 cats rescued, 2 dogs and 2 cats found dead
Shelby, NY (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Apr 12, 2003
County: Orleans

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Zanella Deacon

Orleans County Animal Control officers called investigators to the home of Zanella Deacon at 4541 Baby Lane in Shelby on April 12 for a report of dogs allegedly left unattended there for at least five days, said Lollypop Farm Field Services Vice President Richard Gerbasi. Investigators for The Humane Society at Lollypop Farm have seized 12 dogs and 3 cats from the allegedly squalid Orleans County house.

Investigators who went to the house had to enter through a window because garbage on the floors was so deep the doors would not open, said Humane Society spokesman Jim Basquil.

Gerbasi said the home was "wall to wall feces, urine and garbage."

Once inside, investigators discovered the live animals, as well as two dead cats stacked atop a refrigerator and two dead dogs packed in boxes, Basquil said.

Two live dogs found in the yard were tangled in chains and were unable to move outside a two-foot radius, he said.

No food or water for the animals was found inside or outside the house. Neighbors told investigators they had not seen anyone at the house for at least two weeks.

Gerbasi said the rescued animals were in "reasonable shape," although two of the dogs were "slightly emaciated."

He said all appear to be good candidates for adoption. Basquil said animal cruelty charges are pending against Deacon and that if she is convicted, she could face up to 1 year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
