John Ancrum SPCA officials say the combination of a collar and a neglectful owner resulted in animal abuse.
With balding blonde hair, inflamed skin and protruding ribs, the name "Babydoll" doesn't quite fit the medium-sized spitz cross. SPCA Spokesperson Kay Hyman said, "She was found in Meggett, abandoned."
At the age of five, she has cataracts from malnutrition, and worst of all, visible signs of abuse on her neck. Hyman said, "We really weren't sure how bad it was till staff put her under and shaved the area and realized just how horrible the wound was on her neck."
News 2's Jenny Fisher said, "The gash goes all the way around her neck and you can see just how deep it is in some places. Here, it's about half an inch deep. Officials don't know what caused this, whether it was a rope, a chain or just a collar on too tight, but it did require medical attention."
Yet, Babydoll's content with a belly-rub and a little attention....something SPCA officials say her previous owner didn't offer by the looks of her neck. Hyman looked at the exposed meat and said, "It's horrible to think that happens, but it does. People put a collar on an animal or put a chain on and it literally eats through the skin over a period of time."
Now, it's going to take a period of time for recovery, but shelter officials say someday, the name "Babydoll" will fit the dog.
Officials expect the dog to heal completely. However, she has heartworms, so it's yet another expense for the shelter if she undergoes treatment.
Shelter officials say if you know who owned Babydoll or is responsible for the neglect, call CrimeStoppers at (843) 554-1111. If you have information on this case, please contact: Crimestoppers (843) 554-1111
