Dog neglected, abandoned
Downe Township, NJ (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Oct 20, 2007
County: Cumberland

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

The county's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it plans to file charges against a city man they say abandoned his young English pointer in a marsh near the Delaware Bay.

A person found the 2-year-old female coated in mud and covered in briars Oct. 20 in the Dividing Creek section of Downe Township, cruelty investigator Debbie Young said. The dog was lethargic, dehydrated and in shock, with pale gums and mucus-filled eyes, she said.

"She was a very sad-looking little dog when she came in," Young said.

SPCA workers have named the dog "Jersey Girl" for her remarkable spunk and stamina. This encounter was not the first time the SPCA has had contact with the dog. The dog was brought to the shelter earlier this month after she was found wandering. Her unidentified owner reclaimed her.

According to Young, the owner said he was hunting with Jersey the night before she was found and lost sight of her. Young, however, said Jersey's condition suggested she was in the wild for a longer period of time.

After he was contacted a second time, the owner released the dog into the SPCA's care Thursday. Young said he faces a charge of failing to provide sustenance to an animal.

"She actually had to be carried in, she was at the end. She was dehydrated, emaciated, horrible condition. Her eye was infected, her skin was torn up from brush. She also had a couple of collars irritating. We needed six people working on her, she was in such bad shape," an SPCA worker said.

"He stated she was costing him too much money and she wasn't worth it anymore," Young said, adding that she was hopeful that Jersey, which she described as a fine candidate for adoption, would find a new home.

"She's a very, very sweet dog," Young said.

The Cumberland County SPCA is located at 1244 N. Delsea Drive in Vineland and can be reached at 856-691-1500.
