Intentionally ran over dog
Monterey, CA (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Apr 13, 2003
County: Monterey

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Juan Mejia

On the afternoon of April 13, 31-year-old Juan Mejia was allegedly intoxicated while driving, and smashed into the small dog.  He then allegedly proceeded to swear in Spanish at 12 year old Margarita Sanchez - one of the members of the dog's household.

According to an official Monterey County Sheriff's Office report, "...he (Mejia) stopped his vehicle, spun his tires to obtain speed and then drove into the yard to hit the dog."

The dog, "Brownie," sustained serious injury to its rear right leg and is presently unable to walk.

Sanchez returned to her home and called 911. Three Monterey County Sheriff's vehicles responded. Meija, who was inside a neighbor's home, was apprehended and arrested on felony charges of animal cruelty and drunk in public. The arresting deputy was Diana Foster. Meija remained in Monterey County Jail as of Tuesday evening.

The date for Mejia's trial has not been set.

According to Sanchez's mother, Maria, the family merely wants Mejia to pay for Brownie's medical costs. "He's a nice dog," said Sanchez. "He hasn't hurt anyone. He plays with everyone. He plays with all the kids that come and play with him. We just can't take him to the doctor because my dad hasn't got his check yet."

According to the district attorney's office any restitution of veterinary costs will be at the discretion of the presiding judge.
