When Chance took longer than usual to visit the woods near Pine Island last Saturday afternoon, his owner went looking for him and found him covered in blood.

Chance, a 3-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, had been shot clean through with an arrow likely fired by an errant hunter on the first day of bow-hunting season.

But Chance was very lucky.

The arrow didn't hit any vital organs and a veterinarian at the Hamptonburgh Animal Hospital was able to stitch him back together.

"I'm still in shock," owner Maria Sullivan said. "Every time I look at him, I break out in tears. I'm just hoping he heals OK."

And Sullivan wants to know who shot her dog. She also worries for the safety of her three kids, who play in the yard of their Mount Eve Road home.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating, a difficult process because the arrow was not recovered.

"We'll try to find who did it, but it will be tough unless we can find someone who saw what happened," DEC spokeswoman Wendy Rosenbach said.

Rosenbach asked anyone with information about the incident to call 256-3013 or 256-3006.
